Nayak hattrick helps Cuttack-B win U-16 inter-district cricket title

Cuttack-B emerged champions in the Under-16 Inter-District Cricket Tournament, which concluded at Ravenshaw University ground here today. The Cuttack-B side rode on a four-wicket haul, including a hat-trick by off-spinner Subham Nayak on the final day of the the three-day final to trounce Jajpur by 10 wickets. Pradipta Dash, however, turned out to be the highest wicket-taker of the victorious team with a total of nine wickets for 91 runs. The champion and the runner-up team will be presented the trophy and cash prizes at the annual award giving ceremony to be held on April 1.

The month-long tournament, featuring a total of 62 matches, produced one double century, eight centuries, 52 half-centuries and 34 hauls of five or more wickets in an innings. Dibyashakti Pradhan of Balasore was undoubtedly the most successful batsman of the tournament, hitting the first only double century (237 vs Bhubaneswar), two centuries (142 vs Nabarangpur and 129 vs Paradeep) and a half-century (58 vs Koraput).

Other ton-makers were Sailesh Das (159 for Jagatsinghpur vs Phulbani), Kartik Biswal (129 n.o. for Bhubaneswar-A vs Cuttack-B), Satyajit Sabat (126 for Bhubaneswar-Avs Khurda), Gouranga Pandey (117 for Jharsuguda vs Nuapada), Satyabrata Kandapan (116 for Bargarh vs Khurda), Subrat Samal (105 for Cuttack B vs Ganjam).

Among the bowlers, Bibhuti Bhusan Sahu of Jajpur stood out with hauls of 7/16 (vs Puri) and 5/15 (vs Deogarh). Four other bowlers also bagged five wickets in an innings twice. They were Sundargarh’s Shiv Shankar (6/33 vs Kalahandi and 6/40 vs Angul), Koraput’s Udayabhanu Shanti (6/20 and 5/33 vs Bhubaneswar-B), Rayagada’s G Dilip Kumar (5/33 vs Jharsuguda and 5/33 vs Nuapada) and Bhadrak’s Harshit Rathod (6/52 vs Ganjam and 5/36 vs Jagatsinghpur).

Earlier in the three-day semifinals, Jajpur came from behind to beat Koraput by six wickets, while Cuttack-B drew with Bhubaneswar-A at different grounds here today. But Cuttack-B entered the final by virtue of taking a first innings lead of 41 runs. Bhubaneswar-A, Cuttack-B, Jajpur and Koraput booked berths in the semifinals after securing top four positions in the two-day super league matches.

Altogether 12 teams qualified for the Super league matches (two-day/90 overs per innings), which were conducted from December 27 to January 2. The 12 teams included Cuttack-B, Koraput and Bhadrak, Cuttack-A, Bhubaneswar-A, Bhubaneswar-B, Jajpur, Angul, Khurda, Bargarh, Balasore and Ganjam. Matches were played at Ravenshaw University Ground, Nimpur Ground and SCB Medical College Ground.

BRIEF SCORE (Final): Jajpur 126/10 in 70 overs (Y Srikant 74, Pradipta Dash 5/39, Krishna Choudhury 4/7) and 134/10 in 75.5 overs (Lelin Kumar Bal 58, Bibhuti Bhusan Sahu 25; Subham Nayak 4/13, Pradipta Das 4/52, Susil Barik 2/31) lost to Cuttack-B 256/10 in 108.2 overs (Krishna Choudhury 68, Pradipta Das 47, Saswat Mohanty 37, Subrat Samal 35, Somen Chand 25; Sheikh Azharuddin 3/58, Soumya Ranjan Nayak 2/14) and (5/0 in 0.4 overs) by 10 wkts.
